The Big Sheila – More Chic-Chic Lunches to Come

[LEFT] The Big Sheila is located in Swan Lake Avenue. It’s opened by an ex-colleague who sent us personalized invitations.
[RIGHT] It’s a small restaurant with just a cosy sofa corner and a long communal table.

The big Sheila placed its daily offerings on the counters near the entrance. The first moment of truth was excellent – everything just looked so drop-dead gorgeous and fresh!

Do you like fresh raspberries in your water? I do. 🙂

[LEFT] Moo-ish & Moo-ish – Well roasted beef (With the right hint of pink in the center) on greens served in a vinaigrette dressing.  The “paper plate” was a pain though – It’s really hard to eat your food properly on a piece of paper that slides away from you. 😦
[RIGHT] Sausage & Egg Pie – Simple + Classic = Awesome.

Chocolate Fondant – It’s worth the close to 20 minutes wait (The fondant was baked upon order) to end our chic-chic lunch on a sweet note.  We killed time with a glass of champagne – elavating boring weekday lunches to a new level. 🙂

Overall – The Big Sheila is a refreshing face in the quaint Chai Chee estate. We will definitely return for more gourmet lunches….and post-work drinks in the evening.

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh – The Proximity Friend

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (BKT) has a new branch in Changi Business Park (Right opposite Changi City Point). Hurray for the folks in the East.

[LEFT] Premium Loin Ribs Soup – LIKE the mild pepperish soup. DISLIKE the fatty tough pork.
[RIGHT] Pig Kidney & Stomach Soup – This should only appear in a biology class from my point of view. 😛 I never like innards but my friends love it.

FROM TOP LEFT, CLOCKWISE – Braised Trotter and Intestines, Dough Fritter, Salted Vegetables & Braised Beancurd Skin and Chicken Feet

The side dishes in Song Fa overshadowed the mains. There is a wide variety and they all tasted above average. I also like the sensible portions that are suitable for small groups. 🙂

Overall – Song Fa Bak Kut Teh is good enough to satisfy our BKT cravings but unfortunately, the biggest reason to warrant two visits in the same week is the close proximity.

Wilton Gum Paste & Fondant #1 & 2

My brand new toolkit & lesson plan for Wilton gum paste and fondant course. Wheee.

[LEFT] I’m not a pizza dough! I’m a piece of gum paste.
[RIGHT] The gum paste was cut into multiple neat strips using the pizza cutter then assembled into a pretty bow.

[LEFT] I’m not a xiao long bao skin! I’m one of the petals for the carnation. 🙂
[RIGHT] WOW. This is my favourite creation in lesson 2 but making the 6-7 layers of ruffled petals took alot of time.

My bouquet of flowers (All using gum paste) – Rose, Calla lily & Carnation.

Overall, I really enjoyed my gum paste and fondant lessons. It’s like playing with modeling clay (or play-doh) to create incredible (and edible) stand-up decorations!

I will make my favourite little blue box for the finale cake. Let’s see how it turns out. 🙂

[Sydney] Reuben Hills – Brb

At long last, I visited this not-so-new-anymore café in Surry Hills a couple of sundays back. Reuben Hills was opened earlier this year and has since received much attention for it’s self sourced and roasted coffee as well as finger-licking good food.

Unpretentious shop front with bench – great way to bask in the sunlight while waiting for one’s table.

ENAMEL Drinkware – Hey! Looks like Kitchen by Mike is not the only one going retro. And notice the table top – it’s lined with mosiac tiles, cool beans!

MOCHA – Although caffeine intolerant, I went ahead with this cuppa. No regrets – the coffee was aromatic but not overly strong…just the way I like it to be 🙂

SALTED CARAMEL MILKSHAKE ($7.50) – Best milkshake ever…super sinful but hence super awesome!

THE NOT REUBEN ($16) – Wagyu Salt Brisket, Pickled Slaw, Melted Manchego & Horseradish Cream. Nice slab of beef but what really made the dish are the sauces and flavors that binded everything together.

[LEFT] SOFT BAKED EGGS ($16) – Poached Eggs, Goats Curd, Wilted Spinach & Ranchero Sauce & Rye Sourdough. A hearty and well executed dish for eggs-lover (like my friend, M).
[RIGHT] BALEADA ($13) – Pulled Pimenton Pork, Chimol. Generous amounts of fillings but otherwise nothing memorable.

MILHOJA ($5.50) – ‘Thousand Layers’ Layers of Flakey Pastry & Dulce De Leche…definitely worth giving a miss. The pastry was not flaky at all and it tasted more like short crust – did not work well for us.

Overall, a great addition to Surry Hills – great for its unique coffee blends, good food and all at a very reasonable price. Will definitely be back…real soon!

[Sydney] Il Bolognese – The Reason behind my Midnight Cravings

This is one pizza I find myself craving for at the wake of dawn, sometimes in the middle of the night and especially at the end of a tiring day in the kitchen. I can eat this for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner….any day of the year, I swear.

BELLA’S SPECIAL ($20-$30 depending on size) – Generous portions of prawns, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach and a generous portion of boccocini on every slice…oh so heavenly! I believe this pizza is named after Chef-Owner Celso Grati’s daughter…I can only guess this must be her favorite combination on a pizza.

Overall, Il Bolognese exudes a homely and cosy feel. The restaurant is known to serve large portions at very reasonable prices, on top of it’s awesome BYO policy. It is also interesting to note that corporate functions and takeaways are very popular options in this restaurant.
And yes, parking spaces are aplenty – guaranteed free of parking woes.
