At long last, I visited this not-so-new-anymore café in Surry Hills a couple of sundays back. Reuben Hills was opened earlier this year and has since received much attention for it’s self sourced and roasted coffee as well as finger-licking good food.
Unpretentious shop front with bench – great way to bask in the sunlight while waiting for one’s table.
ENAMEL Drinkware – Hey! Looks like Kitchen by Mike is not the only one going retro. And notice the table top – it’s lined with mosiac tiles, cool beans!
MOCHA – Although caffeine intolerant, I went ahead with this cuppa. No regrets – the coffee was aromatic but not overly strong…just the way I like it to be 🙂
SALTED CARAMEL MILKSHAKE ($7.50) – Best milkshake ever…super sinful but hence super awesome!
THE NOT REUBEN ($16) – Wagyu Salt Brisket, Pickled Slaw, Melted Manchego & Horseradish Cream. Nice slab of beef but what really made the dish are the sauces and flavors that binded everything together.
[LEFT] SOFT BAKED EGGS ($16) – Poached Eggs, Goats Curd, Wilted Spinach & Ranchero Sauce & Rye Sourdough. A hearty and well executed dish for eggs-lover (like my friend, M).
[RIGHT] BALEADA ($13) – Pulled Pimenton Pork, Chimol. Generous amounts of fillings but otherwise nothing memorable.
MILHOJA ($5.50) – ‘Thousand Layers’ Layers of Flakey Pastry & Dulce De Leche…definitely worth giving a miss. The pastry was not flaky at all and it tasted more like short crust – did not work well for us.
Overall, a great addition to Surry Hills – great for its unique coffee blends, good food and all at a very reasonable price. Will definitely be back…real soon!
