[Sydney] Kitchen by Mike – Served in a Warehouse

Situated in a lovely furniture warehouse at Rosebery, my second attempt at visiting this café was a  fruitful one (first attempt was the day K arrived in Sydney in July – I picked her up, headed to Kitchen by Mike, put her off with the long queue and made it up by bring her straight to Danks Street Depot).

Kitchen by Mike is located in Koskela furniture warehouse which sells functional, durable and pretty funky Made-in-OZ furniture (at not so funky prices). Although the furniture warehouse has been around for some time, it was only less than a year ago that former Rockpool Head Chef Michael MacEnearney rooted himself here at the front of the warehouse which has now been converted into a sizable and airy café with tall ceilings.

Open kitchen concept, chalkboard steelboard menu – typical of the warehouse/industrial concept. I appreciate such a concept for:
1) The freedom to gaze at the menu till the cows come home – without having to worry that the waiters are getting impatient to get your order
2) The transparency of knowing how my food is prepared and by whom – food prepared by a cute-looking chef always tastes better?
3) The whole theatrics of hearing, smelling, seeing what is going on in the kitchen – can even pick up a trick or two

EGGS ROYALE ($12) – Very Awesome sourdough, perfectly poached egg and a good hollandaise sauce. Down side is that serving size is extremely small with just 1 egg and zero accompaniment (not even a salad leaf). However, this dish was so nicely executed it left us wanting more. We decided to wait for lunch service to begin….

BUFFET-STYLE LUNCH SPREAD – take our pick on the dishes we like and they will plate it up on an enamel plate (who would have guessed we are back to using enamel again and paying 10 times the price of what it used to cost us?). The spread itself looks highly appealing but upon trying a few of the dishes, it proved rather disappointing. The roast chicken with brocollini ($11) we ordered was rather dry and the sides ($7.50 ea) – although well seasoned and with good flavours, were nothing impressive. Nevertheless, the lunch queue was consistently long throughout the whole time I was there (mainly takeaways by working professionals in that industrial area).

GRAND MARNIER CHOCOLATE CAKE – a very small slice of cake served with a messy heap of whipped cream. Could NOT taste a single trace of grand marnier and texture of the cake was simply not pleasing…my palette tells me they don’t use chocolate couverture …hmm.

Overall, an interesting setting for a café – very kids-friendly with its open spaces. They also have long communal tables for big groups or people who want to meet someone new. Will gladly come back to indulge in their breakfast menu but not so sure about the lunch. Oh yes, parking was a pain.

[London] M&S Simple Food – Singapore Noodles

Marks and Spencer (M&S) Simple Food is a convenient option for a pre-packed meal in London. I tried a few boxes of these quick meals throughout my stay and all of them tasted more than decent. My favourite is the Singapore noodles – No surprises here. 🙂

Singapore Noodles

The description on the box –  Fine rice noodle with tender chicken, pork, free range egg and prawns in a spicy coconut curry sauce.

My description in the Singapore context –  “Char bee hoon with curry chap”. 😛  I’m not sure why this is named THE Singapore noodles (That should be Hokkien mee in my opinion!) but the taste grew on me. It’s so addictive that I ate it several times in my stay!

I also love the rich, buttery croissants in M&S.  The dough is made in France using French flour then baked daily in the store. I will definitely keep a look out for these 2 items in M&S Singapore when I return. 🙂

[London] Raining Celebrity Chefs

Celebrity chef restaurants are everywhere in London. I tried a couple of them during my stay.

The title of the post coincides with the current weather in London – Cold & wet but I’m certainly not complaining. 🙂

Bread Street Kitchen
by Gordon Ramsay

[LEFT] Bread Street Kitchen – Located in Bread Street. Just a stone throw away from the office.  I love food related street names! 🙂
[RIGHT] High ceiling, mismatched sofas and a corporate crowd.

Eggs Benedict with Mushrooms on the side

Two nicely poached eggs & thick slices of ham sitting prettily on a large muffin. Eggs Benny is always a crowd pleaser but the star here was the well-flavoured juicy mushrooms!

Jamie’s Italian
by Jamie Oliver

I did. 🙂

[LEFT] Prawn LinguineFried garlicky prawns with shaved fennel, tomatoes, chilli & rocket
[RIGHT] Sausage Papperdelle – Slow-braised fennel sausage with parmesan & breadcrumbs.

The former is good and the latter is great. It’s my first time trying this type of pasta (Papperdelle) and I love it. According to Wikipedia – Pappardelle are large & very broad fettuccine. They are wide and have fluted edges – Just imagine the shape of a magnified maggie mee. 😛 The crunchy breadcrumbs added a lot of texture to this dish. I would definitely re-order this in my next visit.

Limoncello Tiramisu – WOW! I’m glad that I took the recommendation and chose this seasonal dessert.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon
by Joel Robuchon

L’Atelier’s signature counter seats overseeing the well-designed open kitchen. The chefs worked in a quick & synchronized manner.

[LEFT] Langoustine Ravioli with Savoy Cabbage and Foie Gras Sauce – A dish that made me a Robuchon convert. It is good as expected but somehow not as memorable as the ones served in Singapore.

[RIGHT] Seared Duck Foie Gras with Roasted Peaches and Pistachio. This was served together with Robuchon’s signature mashed potatoes. – Easily the best foie gras i ever had! This dish would score a perfect 10 if only the roasted peaches were a little sweeter.

Ice-cream and Sorbets

FROM LEFT –
Mixed Herbs Sorbet – Imagine a Vietnamese spring roll explosion in the mouth. Clearly a big no-no.
Pear Sorbet – Not exactly near the refreshing taste that I expected.
Banana Ice-cream – It tasted like eating real bananas. Not bad…but not good either.

Obviously, I did not make the right dessert choice – This is nothing like the pleasant Vegas experience I had.  😦

Aqua Nueva
By Alberto Hernandez

Not a “celebrity chef” yet but judging from the crowd – he might be one soon. Alberto trained under Ferran Adria in the 3 michelin starred elbulli before setting up Aqua.

My friend picked Aqua after she failed to get us a reservation in Maze. It’s interesting to see how she converted from a “eat to live” believer to a “live to eat” Michelin starred restaurants hopper (See how working in the world’s top consulting firm can change you. :D)

[LEFT] Assorted Tapas – Aqua Nueva serves contemporary Spanish cuisine and tapas. We had a few rounds of tapas and they were all quality food.
[RIGHT] Textures of Chocolate – The dark chocolate dessert was awesome! The pairing dessert wine (with notes of dry raisins & dates) augmented the overall flavour of this signature dessert.

Selection of Spanish Cheese – I enjoyed the variety on this plate. We spent the last hour in our dinner wine, cheese, chat, wine, cheese, chat…………. 😛

Overall – London is a food heaven with plenty of big names in the culinary world. Let’s hope that I made it to The Fat Duck  in my next visit!

[London] Office Cafeteria – I’m Loving It

We have a cafeteria inside our office building. It’s really a convenient option to grab a quick meal. Moreover, the food in the cafeteria is subsidized!

I really like the breakfast selections – there’s a hot food area serving morning favourites like muffin, ham, sausage etc. I’m so spolit for choices everyday.

Egg & Sausage English Muffin – Imagine Macdonald’s version but bigger, fresher and tastier! I’m loving it. 🙂

[Ho Chi Minh City] Trois Gourmands – A Date with the Truffles

I had my most value worth fine dining experience ever in Trois Gourmands. The restaurant serves good French food in a non-intimidating fine dining ambience.

I introduced Trois to my friends visiting Saigon – Most of them love it so much that they returned for a second time in the same trip.

Trois is opened by Gils, a Frenchman living in Saigon. The restaurant is well reviewed in Trip Advisor, widely known for the generous use of truffles in its dishes.

The menu is extensive. For 2 pax, I recommend that you share the USD45 menu consisting of amuse-bouche, bread basket, 3 starters, 1 main, cheese platter and 2 desserts! What a mouthful – This would probably cost several times more in Singapore.

We started the dinner with a visit to the wine cellar. There is also a small cheese house outside the main restaurant if you are interested to see the wide variety of cheese offered in Trois. What an interesting start to dinner. 🙂

AMUSE-BOUCHE

Truffle Ice-cream – Interesting but not something I would order if it’s on the menu.

Scramble Eggs with truffles – Two of my favourite ingredients marry very well. This is probably worth a re-order…or two. 🙂

ENTRÉE

[LEFT] Beef Ravioli
[RIGHT] Crayfish Ravioli

The meat fared better than the crustacean. The latter tasted a little mushy to me.

Scallops and Mashed Potatoes with truffles – The best starter was the fresh and firm scallops.

It’s easy to get a truffle overdose by now. Almost all their dishes contained truffles.

MAINS

Beef Cheeks with Foie Gras – Nice portion of well seared foie gras on soft beef cheeks. A pretty good rendition of this dish.

CHEESE PLATTER

This is FANTASTIC – Trois Gourmands offers a wide variety of cheese. It’s no surprise that one of their specialties is truffle cheese. 🙂 They even offer to pack the remaining cheese for you if you can’t finish them in the restaurant.

DESSERT

[LEFT] Raspberry Macaroon
[RIGHT] Gils Special Dessert

My dining companion and I were so stuffed by then that we just wanted to order one dessert. However, the charming waitress coaxed us to try these two desserts and also offered to throw in some port wine to round off the night!

The service in Trois is excellent. The Vietnamese waitress was able to speak flawless English and was actually able to “connect” with the clients ! We really wanted to hire her to work for us then. 😛

Overall – Trois Gourmands serves outstanding French food for the prices they charge. I definitely recommend the restaurant to anyone heading to Saigon.
