[Sydney] When K meets P

OFF TO SYDNEY

Truckload of Singapore delights arrived in Sydney – P & K love their hokkien mee!

WINE & DINE

[FROM TOP LEFT, CLOCKWISE] Momofuku Seiobo – Sydney, Enzo – Hunter Valley,
Milk + Honey – Canberra & Alpine Larder – Snowy Mountain.

P & K had tons of great food during their trip BUT…

Nothing beats just having gourmet food and wine at home – The advantages of living with a chef-to-be. 🙂

DRIVE

Sydney|Hunter Valley|Canberra|Snowy Mountain

P drove and K unwillingly picked up the map-reading task after the GPS failed them. After 20 wrong turns and an almost grouchy P – K was finally able to navigate decently (YAY).  The GPS died for a good reason.

Road trips are good for marathon conversations and eating Ding Tai Fung egg fried rice that still tasted fab even when it was eaten icy cold. Three cheers to DTF!

STAY

Lake Crankenback Resort & Spa, Snowy Mountain

Good morning, world!

P & K were awed by the charming resort. They highly recommend Lake Crankenback to anyone heading to snowy mountains.

[TOP LEFT] 7 Bullocks Drive – They rented the studio unit attached to a 3 bedder duplex.
[TOP RIGHT] Spacious room with natural sunlight when the curtains were drawn. LIKE the vibrant orange sofas.
[BOTTOM LEFT] Shared laundry and suana room – YES a suana room, can you imagine that? This is the only common area they have to share with their neighbours in the deplux.
[BOTTOM RIGHT] Kitchenette completed with a dishwasher. P & K made full use of it for their hotpot, giggly & bubbly nights.

You won’t go wrong with 7th Bullock Drive…..unless you hate rainbows. 😛

SKI

Thredbo Ski Resort, Snowy Mountain

P had fun skiing while K had fun talking to the elderly, eating doughnuts and sitting (WHEN not falling) on the snow 😛

ART

National Gallery of Australia, Canberra

P & K “connected” with the art pieces and enjoyed the musuem visit.

REUNION

Overall – An AWESOME holiday! P & K look forward to the next one. 🙂

REALITY

P is back to school trying to juggle between Superior Cuisine & Intermediate Pastry classes.
K is back at her day job counting dollars & cents.

Saigon Sandwich – Authentic Vietnamese Food in Singapore #10

Saigon Sandwich – The new kid on the block in the world of banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich). The cafe is opened by an investment banker and his Vietnamese wife. The missus family has a baguette bakery in Saigon where they pick up their baking skills from.

The café offers several banh mi options and a couple of Vietnamese favourites like spring rolls & pho etc.

SAIGON SPECIAL SANDWICH – The bread here is a winner by its own – extremely crisp on the outside but airy and soft on the inside. It’s so addictive that you might order another one! I did. 🙂

The cafe carries a variety of Vietnamese products including my favourite brand of rice paper – No need to buy them from Ben Thanh market anymore!

Overall, Saigon Sandwich is a worthy new competitor in the banh mi space here.  I will definitely return for the unbeatable baguettes.

Hot Star Large Fried Chicken (豪大大雞排) – Finally in Singapore

豪大大雞排 is a star attraction in 士林夜市, Taipei. It is a satisfying snack that is definitely worth making a beeline for. I was thrilled when I heard that it’s finally coming to Singapore.

Long queues – just like in the Taipei night market.

豪大大雞排 has a bigger menu in Singapore.  The famous fried chicken came in several flavours i.e seaweed, sour plum etc. They also sell many other fried items like sotong balls, mushroom & chicken wings. Old Chang Kee – watch out! 🙂

The fried chicken is huge & succulent – definitely comparable to the original Taiwanese version. Moreover, it is at least 20% bigger than the other similarly priced  Taiwanese fried chicken (i.e. 士林夜市)  in Singapore.

Overall – 豪大大雞排 certainly takes the throne for the best Taiwanese fried chicken in Singapore now. This explains the snake queues seen at the stall. The painful wait can be up to 45 minutes so do bring your patience along!

[Ho Chi Minh City] Cuc Gach Quan – Homestyle Vietnamese Favourites

Cuc Gach Quan is my most frequented restaurant in Saigon. And no, I can’t pronounce the name. 😛

This is one of the safest choices to bring visitors for wholesome Vietnamese food – Even Brangelina visited this restaurant in their Saigon trip!

Cuc Gach Quan is so popular that reservations is a must. Having the experience of being turned away at the door – I make a point to reserve a table now.

[FROM TOP LEFT, CLOCKWISE] Sauteed zucchini flower with garlic,  Crispy sea bass with passionfruit sauce, Squid with tamarind sauce & Sauteed beef with lemongrass and chili

The restaurant serves my kind of comfort food. It focuses on the original taste of the food and does not use MSG or other chemical preservatives. True to its motto to “eat green & live healthy – The dishes tasted homecooked, light yet flavourful.

The above four dishes are my must orders after countless times to Cuc Qach Quan. One of the most unique dishes is the zucchini flowers – best when sautéed with garlic or beef slices.

The dishes go very well with brown rice. You will feel that you ate well (yet satisfied) after the meal.

They serve a wide variety of fresh fruit juices here with honey on the side. Look at the bottle stopper  (pandan leaf) and the straw (vegetable stem) – How innovative and environmental friendly!

Overall – Cuc Qach Quan is a perfect place for homestyle Vietnamese food. It stays permanently on my “to go” list whenever I visit Saigon.
