5 Other Places (Besides Putian) to get a Good Bowl of Heng Hwa Lor Mee in Singapore

FullSizeRenderPutian’s Heng Hwa Lor Mee

Heng Hwa lor mee is a staple (Read #cookforfamily) in my family. We love this bowl of gluey, white noodles infused with a strong seafood flavor – that’s definitely comfort food for us.

Everyone thinks of Putian when they think of Heng Hwa lor mee (or Heng Hwa cuisine) in Singapore. Putian does serve some good Heng Hwa dishes and it’s really accessible given that the chain has 10 branches, including a swanky one newly opened in Ion Orchard.

My family frequented Putian way back since it started its first shop in Kitchener road. We like the consistency of quality Heng Hwa food served there.  However, in recent years, we noticed a sharp dip in their service levels and a steep increase in the prices – certainly not the best combination to please your customers. :)

So…. here are 5 other places in Singapore where you can also get an equally good (yet cheaper) bowl of Heng Hwa lor mee. Note: A bowl of lor mee from Putian starts from $9.50.

Ming Chung Restaurant - For the Traditionalist

Ming Chung
Ming Chung is one of the oldest Heng Hwa restaurant in Singapore (Established in 1933). This is a long-time favourite in my family. The waiting time for the food used to be crazy during meal times (more than an hour). However, I got my Heng Hwa lor mee after 10 minutes in a recent visit during dinner time. Ming Chung is probably facing strong competition from the Putian ever-growing empire.

The Heng Hwa lor mee in Ming Chung is one of the best in Singapore – sinfully rich and flavorful. The other must-order here is the fried ma jiao fish with their special chili dip – very addictive.

A bowl of lor mee in Ming Chung starts from $5.

Xing Hua Vegetarian Restaurant – For the Vegetarians

I was not expecting too much from this bowl of vegetarian Heng Hwa lor mee as I thought it would be difficult to create the much needed seafood flavor for this dish. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I actually like this version with mock prawns, pork belly and pork slices! The restaurant managed to create a clean yet yummy soup base (maybe with Kombu and beans?)

A much lighter (but in no way less delicious) version from my point of view.

A bowl of lor mee in Xing Hua vegetarian restaurant starts from $5.

Putian Delights – For Someone on a Shoestring Budget

Yes, you can get Heng Hwa lor mee in the hawker centre! We found this gem in the Alexandra village  food centre.

The soup base here tasted a little weak but overall, it is still reasonably tasty. I don’t think we can complain about the few thin slices of pork and malnutrition prawns given the affordable pricing.

We got ourselves a plate of chili lala- these plump babies are the true stars here. Highly recommended!

A bowl of lor mee from Putian Delights starts from $3.5

Xing Hua Family Restaurant – For the Heartlanders

The restaurant was packed on a weekday lunch and we had to share our table with another couple. The restaurant serves a mean bowl of Heng Hwa lor mee – Well cooked noodles with generous ingredients. We regretted not ordering the biggest portion. We also liked the sweet and sour pork with lychee here.

You can purchase fresh noodles and dried seaweed from Xing Hua Family Restaurant if you plan to make your own bowl of Heng Hwa lor mee at home!

A bowl of lor mee in Xing Hua Family Restaurant starts from $5.

Old House – For the Clubbers

Old house’s signature dish is the  white lor mee. The restaurant is a stone throw away from Clarke Quay and operates till the wee hours. It makes a good post drinking supper place.

Old house’s lor mee is a tad too oily and salty. It contains ingredients like lard and squid which are not commonly found in lor mee.

A bowl of lor mee in Old House starts from $6.
